Reflecting on how in the 80s-90s you could be a goth (or punk/jock/etc) with just one or two non-standard fashion choices, because you were mainly dressing relative to your local school environment — not hard to contrast with. Now dressing goth is relative to what you see in online niches, which have naturally escalating identifiers driven by internal competition (see looksmaxxing, and well lots of stuff)
