Apolitical literary people being into Bolano is confusing to me cause if there was an American version of Bolano writing literature somewhere in the United States, literary people would probably call him “woke”, “PC” or something else. He has a whole book excoriating Nazism. He wouldn’t be crying on the Internet about Charlie Kirk. The reality is that many American writers enjoy the writing of the Left in the historical and geographically removed contexts but there’s little appreciation for actual Left-wing writers in America. I think some of this has to do with how conservative this country is and how people have associated the liberalism of the literary world with “The Left” whilst the actual Left is largely excised from the literary establishment. Okay, rant over, gonna go back to reading The Savage Detectives.
