This misshapen map resizes Italy’s regions based on per-capita foreign tourism.
It’s no surprise that 20 locations dominate (I’m so sorry, Veneto), while some of my favorite regions (Abruzzo, Basilicata, Friuli, Calabria) barely show up.
I found the map after research sparked by some of the comments in my Who Is Italy For? post on over tourism from a month ago (link: italiandispatch.com/p/w…).
The imbalance between regions is even more dramatic than I expected, and it raises a question touched on in the post: How can Italy spread the benefits of tourism without destroying the places people come to see?
