One of my more formative political experiences was writing for Columbia Law School during Obama’s second term, when it was almost universally assumed among progressive legal eagles that the “Blue Wall” had given Democrats a lock on the presidency and soon the Supreme Court for the foreseeable future. Literally every day, faculty I covered would gloat about the wishlist of progressive policies that could never pass Congress that they would imminently use the judiciary to impose on the backwards and recalcitrant American people no matter how much they squealed. So it’s impossible for me to take slogans like “No Kings” seriously, many of today’s loudest voices against “authoritarianism” were all for it so long as they thought they’d get to be the authoritarians.
