Cleaning out the Augean Stables of academic publishing is going to cost a lot of presently upper middle-class people their jobs, social status, and housing in desirable neighborhoods, but the present racket is indefensible. Much as they told Americans rendered obsolescent to “learn to code,” they may need to learn to shop for Instacart customers.

The costs of running a peer review and distribution system are real and must be paid, but the current system of paying journals to publish your paper, assigning the copyright of same to them, and then having to pay fees to access scientific literature does seem to be pure rent seeking. And the federal government via NIH and NSF often ends of paying at multiple levels of this current system, so they pay two or three times.
