The Salah news isn’t surprising. In fact, in some ways it’s remarkable he didn’t leave sooner. But what a moment, eh?
It’s hard to think of another player who has made such a momentous impact on PL culture, interest and era-defining stats in the last nine years. KDB comes to mind, but not in the same way; there’s something unassuming about de Bruyne. A sense of outward humbleness that would never suit a player like Salah.
255 goals, myriad assists and genuinely some of the most paradigm-shifting, head-spinningly exciting football the PL has ever seen. It’s an absolute travesty he’s never won the Ballon d’Or, and I suppose where he goes next might dictate his chances of doing so.
I don’t want to be that guy, but it also maybe feels a little bit like the glory years of flashy PL wing play departing this mortal coil. Other than Doku on his day, who else encapsulates the rapturous, unplayable silkiness that we’ll all remember Salah for?
Hopefully he sees out these last few months with one hell of a farewell.
