This recent exposé on a professional illegal surrogacy ring is one of the few operations that got caught, but it won’t be the last.
With a dangerously skewed sex ratio—China has about 35 million more males than females, the highest imbalance in the world—the country is now facing the consequences of decades of female infanticide and sex-selective abortion. Now, in desperation to boost birth rates, we are seeing the rise of state-enabled breeding policies, with horrifying human rights implications.
Tragically, this includes a surge in the trafficking of impoverished women from neighboring countries—forced into marriages, childbirth, or surrogacy. It's already happening. And it’s only going to get worse.
