I did an interview not too long ago where I told the artist that I was amazed that he had lived on his own and navigated his own career from the time he was 15 or 16 years old. I mentioned that I had a child the same age, and there’s no way he could move out on his own. (Frankly, I couldn’t have, either.) He said, “That means you’re a good parent.”
I had never thought about it that way. It’s not that my son couldn’t be self-sufficient. It’s that he didn’t/doesn’t have to worry about it as a teenager. This artist didn’t have that option and said it was his privilege to raise his child differently.
