Confirmation today that one of Shanghai’s leading alternative nightlife spaces, ALL, is closing.
Opened in 2017 by Gaz Williams and partners, ALL was the successor to the pioneering underground (literally) club The Shelter, which occupied a former bomb shelter in downtown Shanghai and was hugely influential in nurturing the city’s alternative electronic scene from 2007-2016. Everyone from Kode9 to Madlib to Goldie have played at one or both of the venues over the years, but more than that, they fostered a community of young Chinese producers and inspired similar spaces in cities across the country.
They’d already announced that their Xiangyang Lu space would be shutting down after their eighth birthday blow-out this weekend, but the phrasing had led some to speculate that ALL was just relocating. “Nope, we’re closing,” was the clarifying message today.
And so, another alternative culture space in China is lost, joining recent significant closures such as FruitySpace and DADA in Beijing and Loopy in Hangzhou.
