Crucifixion was brutal, horrifying, and designed to dehumanize. The crucified were always stripped. The Bible even tells us that soldiers divided up Christ’s clothes, “And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots” (Matthew 27:35).

Jesus nakedness on the cross brings a theological point home.

The first Adam was naked when he sinned.

Jesus, the second Adam, is naked but he is taking away our sin, becoming our sin (2 Cor 5:21).

A naked human brought sin into the world.

A naked human is taking sin away.

The shame of sin and the cross collide on Christ—to dress us in his righteousness.

Thank you, Jesus!
