The app for independent voices

Once again, the wonderful Sarah Faxon has provided a thought-provoking Flash Fiction Friday prompt. This week, since I love stories with creepy kids, I chose the prompt: a child is standing in the middle of the road.

Sarah wrote a nice spooky one. Uncharacteristicly for me, I went sentimental. I hope my Drabble touches something in you.

INNER CHILD

Last Sunday, I drove by my old elementary school before they tore it down. As I parked and got out, I noticed a curly-headed boy, standing by himself in the middle of the road.

“It’s not safe out here,” I said.

“It’s fine,” said he.

Sudden tears blurred my vision as I recognized the voice.

“You’re ok,” he continued. “You just lost your way.”

“How?”

He stepped forward and took my hand.

“You left me behind and forgot about us.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“That’s ok. It’s never too late to remember.”

Taking my hand, we walked to the playground, together.
