On the streets of Athens I saw a car not unlike the one I was riding in when I first heard the song “California Uber Allies,” and for a moment I was back there, bouncing around the pit, Jello up on stage one second, crowd surfing atop our hands the next. Among the sweat and shoulders was a kid in a tee that said, “Kill Me, I’ve Never Died Before.” Tony Cadena. Lead singer of the Adolescents. Their song “Kids of the Black Hole” was an anthem. So was “Rip It Up.” And we ripped it up — at the shows, on the sidewalks, on the waves. About ten years ago I met Tony at a Dinosaur Jr show at the Roxy. I said, “I remember your T-shirt - always stayed with me. He said, “I loved that T-shirt.”
