Great rec from Celine. I think the perspective Dolan espouses here is only becoming more resonant with the foreclosure of academic careers in the humanities. A probable majority of my English PhD peers are working outside of academia and have made various degrees of compromise regarding the balance between security and meaningfulness. In my own case — from one standpoint my job as a private school teacher can be reduced to contribution to the reproduction of the upper class by (at best) helping them to get into elite schools or (at worst) babysitting them; from another standpoint I experience my job as (at best) shaping the children of the wealthy to be more thoughtful humans or (at worst) mitigating the most evil outcomes. Both are partial truths, but the latter is at least flexible and endurable.
