I experimented with a few AI detection websites. I put an early draft of a book chapter into them, knowing that none of it was AI-generated.
They all disagreed — not just about whether or not I was using AI, but also which sentences were AI-generated. One of the websites said the sentence ‘Imagine you are in a cave’ was likely the product of AI.
Not only do we not know what to do about AI writing…we don’t even know how to detect it. And could it even in principle be the kind of thing you can detect?
