I’ve never felt more aware of my own ignorance—or learned more in a class—than in my weekly Oxford tutorial. I went from getting straight As with no comments on papers (at Stanford!) to my tutor asking, “Do you know what a topic sentence is?”

It’s also just incredibly hard to BS the readings/essays when you have a 1-1 grill session every week.

the obvious solution to the AI problem in college liberal arts programs is to take the Oxbridge approach and ask students to verbally explain and defend arguments made in essays and on assignments. No one learns anything in 200-person lectures anyway. Almost all the actual learning happens in tutorials.
