The app for independent voices

Now that we are nearing the halfway point in this project, we can begin experimenting with some of the visuals that help articulate the overall argument. This is a first attempt.

For those who are not familiar, Taming the Gift is a project about what modern systems do to the gift and the effect this has on fundraising outcomes. We begin with a simple claim: the gift is not originally a transaction, a metric, or a technique. It is embedded in relationship, memory, obligation, recognition, and time. But once institutions try to make it portable, manageable, and scalable, something changes.

That is the concern at the center of this project. We are exploring how the gift gets disembedded from the human conditions that give it meaning, then engineered into forms that are easier to measure, control, and optimize. What is gained in efficiency is often purchased at the cost of encounter, context, and the kind of wonder that no system can produce or account for.

This project is our attempt to name that process and think more clearly about what it would mean to recover a fuller, wilder, less domesticated account of the gift.
