At the start of this year’s legislative session in Florida, the state House and Senate introduced dueling bills to regulate construction of new data centers.
The Senate bill (SB 484) was fairly mild right from the beginning. But the House bill (HB 1007) was quite aggressive: It would have banned tax incentives for data centers, prohibited construction of data centers on agricultural land, etc.
Guess which one that Florida Power & Light — Florida’s biggest monopoly electric utility and one of the biggest campaign contributors in all of state politics — preferred?
Here are executives at NextEra Energy (FPL’s parent company) discussing it during the company’s Q4 earnings call, which was held in late January, as Florida’s legislative session was underway.
