Seeking Rents focuses a lot on all the special interest cash that gets showered on Florida Republicans in Tallahassee. That’s partly because Republicans hold the Governor’s Office, supermajorities in both chambers of the Legislature, and all three statewide elected Cabinet posts. They have complete control over what happens in the Capitol.

But it’s also important to remember that many of the corporate interests buying access to Florida Republicans also spend money currying favor with some Democrats, too.

An example: Newly filed reports show that a fundraising committee led by the incoming House Democratic Leader (Rep. Christine Hunschofsky, D-Parkland) took $10,000 just before this year’s session began from the giant landowner that was behind the controversial “Blue Ribbon Projects” bill — the legislation that, had it passed, would enabled city-sized real-estate developments on rural tracts of land without any meaningful input from neighboring residents or local elected officials.
