OpenAI's Workspace Agents are built differently. They're Codex-powered, persistent, and designed to run across Slack, SharePoint, and Google Drive - without waiting for someone to prompt them. The work happens while your team is offline.
The most telling design choice: OpenAI shipped role-based permissions and admin governance controls on day one. That's not infrastructure for a tool. That's infrastructure for an employee. You don't build access hierarchies for a calculator.
What's actually changing is where organizational authority sits. When an agent can monitor channels, pull documents, generate reports, and ship code on a recurring schedule - it holds a functional role inside your company. The question stops being "how do I use AI?" and becomes "who owns the work my agent did?"
Most companies haven't answered that yet. The ones that do first will have a meaningful structural advantage over the ones still running on prompts.
