I have just learnt, and I confess I have not checked this fact for veracity, that in the 1500s the average length of an English sentence was 63 words; a state of affairs that did not stay the course, since by 1950 it had dropped to a mere fourteen words in length, no doubt in line with the increasing urgency of the times. Now we content ourselves with just seven.
