Make money doing the work you believe in

Today’s glimmer: Last night I got a call from my fellow Community Fridges organizer. She was at our local farmers’ market and had been offered a bunch of food. Could I help move it? Immediately? Reader, I could. And so could a couple other cyclists. We showed up with our bike trailers, and we loaded them with fresh produce, divine quiches, strawberry rhubarb pies. I biked it over to our local fridge, filled it up, and made it home only a little delayed for my own dinner.

Farmers and small producers are often very generous with us, and that means we can bring locally grown, often organic food to our locations a few times a week. Part of the reason they donate or sell to us at a discount is often it would get composted otherwise, because many farmers don’t have the infrastructure to keep things cool or sell the excess before it is past its prime. This is a big-picture problem that deserves government assistance, but in the meantime there are generous farmers and organizers who will coordinate and cyclists who will pull bike trailers full of food halfway across the city so that people in need can have something beautiful.
