USA Hockey has done an excellent job instilling the importance of good sportsmanship from our teams, players and parents. Up until now, at least.
We, as hockey parents, are required to STUDY good sportsmanship before we can be directly involved with the team. We could be expelled from the stands or the locker room for “joking” or disparaging another team or team member. We are required to STUDY predatory behaviors in adults and always be on the lookout for inappropriate behaviors in both children and adults and be reliable reporters to authorities should that be needed. We are coached on how to correct and steer the children in the right direction if they stray from our expected behaviors.
We are EXPECTED to drill into our children what is appropriate behavior and what is not. Any level of sexist joking, bullying or even an offhand remark could result in being corrected or dismissed.
After the exciting, unifying win by the TeamUSA hockey team, the President of the United States, posts an AI generated video of himself in his signature suit and red tie, skating down the ice and scoring the game winning goal and punching a Canadian player in the face. THIS WOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE IN YOUTH HOCKEY! How is this ok at the highest level?
Several asshats from my past decided to post pictures of a bald eagle in USA jersey sitting on the neck of a Canadian goose in a Canadian jersey (who looked like he was choking btw). I wonder where they got this VERY unsportsmanlike conduct. I unceremoniously unfriended them.
This is why I feel compelled to speak out on just how far this country has fallen.
This is the literal example set by the highest office in the land. OUR CHILDREN ARE WATCHING.
Lastly, as a mother of a daughter who LOVES the game of hockey and who plays on a coed team, the fact that the director of the FBI/pedophile protector was chugging beer with the team and “joking” on the phone with the pedophile creep who happens to be the President at the expense of the ALSO GOLD MEDAL winning women, was soul crushing to say the least.
The fact that three days have gone by and there is nothing but silence from the players, USA hockey and the NHL about the unsportsmanlike conduct of the men’s team, is sickening.
After spending a great deal of my adult life indulging in various levels of outrage, I have worked tirelessly to put it all in perspective and choose peace for my internal world. I have to believe that everything is working out. This latest “outrage” has proven to be one of the more challenging situations. This incident is just the latest in a series of shameful examples of how far we continue to fall.
Someone posted that men's hockey team may have won the Gold, but they turned out to be the biggest losers. I couldn't agree more. They failed us at the highest level.
I was proud of hockey. I was proud that we strived to make it a safe, fun sport for everyone. I loved that my daughter played on a team with boys, and I felt she was safe from misogyny and sexism in this sport because of our collective commitment to safety, inclusion and good sportsmanship.
I am no longer under any such illusions. This country has been ruined and continues to be ruined by a madman who is enabled by blindly loyal subjects. Shame on us. And shame on USA Hockey.
