When prompted by Aminus3 Photography to pick my favorite photo of 2025, the choice was actually quite simple. For me, the favorite image I captured last year was one that contained eerie echoes of a painting my grandfather created over 80 years ago.
When I photographed the discarded belongings of an evicted family, I composed it to include an American flag and a church steeple. However, it wasn’t until later, when I looked at it on my computer screen, that I was struck by the fact that my grandfather’s painting also contained all those elements.
The newsletter post about the photograph begins,
“It’s shameful that American prosperity does not extend to all its citizens.”
