I’m also highly worried about this, because like Jasmine, it’s unclear to me how we defeat this dynamic.

Decades ago elites used to be judged in a very broad, long term sense. They weren’t subject to 24-hour cable news, much less at the pace of the internet. You didn’t know much about what they were up to, and even if you looked the details you could find were limited. That worked fine, because in the end you’d still see results months/years later and judge them on results.

Now we’re in an environment in which elites are judged 24/7 by the global panopticon, and I don’t think it’s a great way to run society.

I'm increasingly worried about the "Revolt of the Public problem”

1) it’s great that new media provides more info/accountability about institutional failures, but

2) amplifying every mistake causes nihilism & diminished state capacity, e.g. defunding the NSF for a few dumb grants

not sure how we solve this!
