The Unspoken Successor

Following Joe Biden's recent lackluster performance, the clamor for him to step aside has become almost overwhelming. However, aside from occasional mentions of Governor Newsom, there is a notable absence of concrete suggestions for a successor. This dilemma arises for two primary reasons. First, given that the President is seeking reelection, the party has traditionally—and understandably—refrained from heavily promoting an alternative candidate. Second, Vice President Kamala Harris, who occupies a significant position of power, has not been taken seriously as a potential contender despite her prominent role.

At 59, Kamala Harris is arguably at the pinnacle of her intellectual rigor, likely capable of holding her own against any challenger in a debate, provided her policies resonate favorably. Yet, her public profile remains somewhat marginalized, as though she is sidelined when significant matters are being addressed by more senior figures. Admittedly, this characterization might be somewhat exaggerated. However, consider this: when was the last time you heard Harris prominently mentioned in relation to any major issue? The infrequency of such mentions speaks volumes.

One might assume that the Vice President's role in succession is to step in should the President become unavailable and to run for office after the President's terms conclude. However, it seems that Kamala Harris has been positioned in a way that suggests the powers-that-be never seriously considered her for either of these roles. Were this not the case, there would be an automatic expectation for Harris to replace Biden in the upcoming election. Instead, there is a conspicuous silence—a call for change that overlooks a historic and capable woman. What, then, is wrong with Harris? I will leave that question for the political pundits to debate.

What I can underscore is the conspicuous silence from those who should be vocal in their support. Despite being a Democrat whose policies and approach to national affairs align with institutional key points, there is a notable absence of endorsement from the groups she purportedly represents in her role. This silence is perplexing, given that her political stance and efforts should, in theory, galvanize these very constituencies.
