I generally agree. Nowadays, we think too “small.” This is likely, in part, a consequence of the rising ambivalence to human progress that began circa 1970.

Until then, really from the start of the Industrial Revolution, was a time of relative techno-optimism. Kennedy proclaimed, in the early 1960s, that “before the decade was out,” we would have a man on the Moon. That’s madness! Now we struggle to build high-speed rail lines….
