Tuesday Tunes

Continuing with my project of writing short themes for the characters in Company of Ghosts. This week is Cariza, a minor character in Andza’s backstory and the only named harp player in the entire story.

For the music theory nerds, I shifted the A Dorian from Andza’s theme up to C Lydian to get a more hopeful sound out of the same key signature.

The tune uses the antecedent-consequent structure, where the raised fourth (F#) prevents me from resolving neatly to C in the first part. The second part embraces the minor/major progression in the left hand before just playing the Lydian scale outright and landing back on C.

It’s a short window into the character’s emotional journey, as he struggles with (and ultimately accepts) the tragedy of losing friends in battle as a mercenary captain.
