The app for independent voices

Yesterday I wrote a post about some areas that I hope Substack will address as they relate to fiction writers. As part of that post, I held up Ream as an example of a company who is doing many things right.

Now, I’m seeing many people talking about jumping to Ream. I do think it’s worth exploring Ream and maybe duplicating content there to see if it resonates, but you need to understand that jumping platforms probably isn’t going to be the magic answer.

Using internet platforms is very much like dating. You might find some potential interest who has a prettier smile or a bigger bank account or is different in some way that you find more appealing than your existing partner, but you should be aware that many times you’re just swapping out one set of problems for an entirely different set.

Every platform has pain points. Utopia doesn’t actually exist. You might find some aspects of another platform to be more enjoyable or cause less frustration, but you are also going to inherit an entirely new set of problems.

I want Substack to fix their problems.
