We went to nearby Claydon House, what remains of an enormous pile build by a profligate scion of the Verney family. Ralph, the 2nd Earl Verney, hired a wood carver to design the building; most of it was barely safe when Ralph died bankrupt (despite an investment in a Jamaican plantation), and his heir niece had to have two thirds of the mansion demolished. The interior of what remains is stunning, full of ornate wood carvings, painted to appear like plaster decoration. The Chinese Room is particularly impressive, in its vulgar bloated chinoiserie way. The mansion contains a Javanese Gamelan, once owned by Stamford Raffles. There are displays about Florence Nightingale, one of the sisters-in-law of a later Verney scion, who often stayed at the house. The local parish church is in the grounds, full of impressive Verney monuments.
