Japan was hit hard by the Trump-Israeli war on Iran. The nation imports 90–95% of its crude oil from the Middle East. The closing of the Strait of Hormuz meant Japan now has oil shortages, causing price surges.
It has increased even Japanese bathhouses energy costs, while other industries have been forced to slow down. So now Japan has started buying Russian oil.
The more important insight is that we have achieved Peak Globalism and there really isn't much leeway for big global conflicts. Every breakdown of the global energy supply routes, such as Hormuz, is now going to have big consequences somewhere around the world.
Think of the butterfly effect of Japan someday switching loyalty to Russia for its energy security. That would actually be a big strategic blow to the West's security.
