The St. Cuthbert Gospel, an eighth-century manuscript of John’s Gospel, is the oldest intact European book. The British Library bought it in 2012 for $14 million. The book was kept in the coffin of St Cuthbert, an esteemed monk, missionary, pastor, healer, and bishop. The book is small enough to be held in the hand and is one of the finest examples of Anglo-Saxon artistry.
