Really good piece from Naomi Alderman acknowledging the often-unsaid thing about audiobooks: they’re not the exactly the same as actually sitting down and reading, but sometimes this is worse and sometimes it’s actually better. (Also it recommends lots of interesting-sounding books but NOT the full-cast-recording of Lincoln In The Bardo, which is an absolutely incredible listen)

But if there is a complicated plot or argument and you’ll need to be turning the pages back and forth to remind yourself of the meaning of epistemology vs ontology and deontology, or the last time you met this character or what the secret message said in the dossier or why Captain Leclerq has disguised himself as a transistor operator in the enemy camp… audio isn’t great for searching through at speed or taking a pause and having a think and so the read will be less enjoyable.
