Make money doing the work you believe in

Speaking just for myself it seems to me wholly unlikely that the older workerist left (importantly for me I don’t regard this workerism as a negative phenomena to be contrasted unfavourably with the new social movements: rather as something that regenerated an older left and pointed in many different directions: but whose historical moment has now passed) is likely to play any role in confronting the new authoritarianism. This wouldn’t matter so much if their conclusions weren’t all too often to produce alternative forms of the new illiberalism (and we see the same flirtations with illiberal populism in the new social movements as well). It’s true that the fourth international has turned out better. But to what ultimate purpose. Not siding with the enemy is surely a pre-requisite. But it’s hardly a destination.
