Isimila, Tanzania, is an area where ancient lake deposits are eroding in a pattern known across East Africa as a korongo. In this area, the erosion has created striking columns of ancient sediment. Stone tools including many handaxes from these sediments date to between 500,000 and 300,000 years ago.
