Klasies River main site, South Africa, has Middle Stone Age archaeological material from 120,000 to 60,000 years in age. The human fossil fragments from the site are among the few that represent makers of these MSA traditions in southern Africa.

Subsistence at the site in that era was centered on hunted large game animals like eland, with collection of shellfish making up an important part of their diet.
