Wonderwerk Cave, South Africa, has a 140-meter-long underground gallery that has been used by hominins for more than one million years. Some of the oldest archaeological remains in the cave include some of the earliest evidence for controlled fire by hominins.
In layers going back hundreds of thousands of years are chunks of a sparkly mineral called specularite, brought into the cave from outside.
