They hang in the sky for long periods of time and slowly spread out, causing a hazy sky. If you take time to observe it will become obvious fairly quickly - for example, you will see multiple jets flying at similar altitudes, with some having a huge massive trail behind and others with nothing. I have also seen ones that turn off and on as they fly....
