The 1945 movie “They Were Expendable” is a great evocation of the people and country of that day. It begins with the Pearl Harbor attack, as heard by sailors in the Philippines, who then fight the Japanese. Directed by John Ford and starring Robert Montgomery, whose acting surpasses even costar John Wayne. And don’t miss 1946’s “The Best Days of Our Lives,” about troops returning home. Which produced a Goldwynism: “I don’t care if it doesn’t make a nickel, I want every man, woman and child in America to see it.”
