Nice article from Catherine McBride, but it’s a shame she only allows paid subscribers to comment.

More NS production would lower UK gas costs, obviously. More storage would also lower costs in a price spike, but storage is not free, so that equation is a bit more complicated.

What Catherine doesn’t mention (probably doesn’t understand) is that roughly ¼ of UK gas consumption is used to generate electricity. Aside from our remaining oil & gas, the UK has VAST untapped coal resources. Were we to come to our senses and use coal to generate electricity, we would reduce our gas consumption accordingly. Coal is cheap, easily stored, and abundant. The perfect fuel for power generation.

Combined with an increase in supply from the North Sea, that would dramatically reduce our need for expensive LNG. And hence significantly reduce gas prices.

It wouldn’t do much for electricity prices though - for that we need to put Miliband in jail and dismantle the ”renewables” lunacy. One thing at a time…

Yes, the North Sea could give the UK gas security!
