The Nuckelavee is one of my favorite folklore creatures, and he made a brief appearance in Salem, which is being serialized now. I wrote this little drabble about him today, now that he is back on my mind.
Pestilence
The skinless horse stepped out of the water, he and his rider fused together by flesh that looked like melted wax. Their state of decay spoke of something long dead, and yet they moved with a purpose.
The rider steered his mount toward the crops, his pale eyes looking skyward, searching for the first signs of rain. They pressed forward, crops withering and dying in their wake.
The famers watched from their bothy’s, praying for the downpour of fresh water that would send the beast back to the sea. It came soon enough, but not before the damage was done.
