Philosophy is not something we merely consume. Even if we are just reading a philosophy book, we must be actively engaged, following the arguments and ideas, testing and applying them. To passively consume philosophy would not be philosophy at all but mere indoctrination. Plato was a wrestler, and I think that’s a good way to think of philosophy — we have to bring our whole selves to the arena and grapple. Not because we are the best, but for the love of the sport — for the love of wisdom.
