Nobody quiet quit. The company stopped paying for the extra effort and acted surprised when people stopped donating it.
For years the understood deal was that you go above and beyond and good things follow. Then the raises got smaller, the promotions got rarer, the talk about being a family got tested by a layoff, and the people watching all of it recalibrated to the deal that was actually on the table, the way anyone does when the terms change without anyone admitting it.
You can call that quitting if it makes the spreadsheet feel better. The effort left when the reward did, exactly the way it was always going to.
