‘Stravedamento’ is a word whose full meaning is tricky to convey. It carries with it a sense of wonder, and comes from the dialect of the nearby town of Chioggia, whose fishermen coined ‘stravedamento’ to define a clear and visible horizon.

It’s one of those Italian words that you can’t translate literally but which is just so very useful: you’d use the verb - ‘stravedere’ - to describe that moment when you mistake someone for someone else even though you could have absolutely sworn that it was the person you’d first thought. Or when you’re convinced something happened but realise, reluctantly, that you must have imagined it. It’s also used when you love something so much that you can’t see its faults. So, an idea of miraculous, mind-befuddling, denial of reality.
