I painted this Josh Clare master study in gouache. I like doing these because all of the hard decisions are already made. The composition is worked out, and the value structure is established, which are usually the hardest parts to figure out.

At that point it’s really just trying to see what’s actually happening, following the decisions that are already on the page. It feels a bit more direct, and I always end up learning a lot from it.
