We wanted the same thing, me and my daughter, this girl who had her mother’s eyes and her mother’s fierce stubborn love and had apparently inherited her mother’s habit of taking care of me whether I asked for it or not. We’d been wanting it separately, quietly, afraid to say it to each other, and here we were on the other side of saying it. Ramona was it.
