When hikers from abroad see this, I always have to explain it to ’em: those neatly split stacks of firewood at scenic viewpoints — and the fire pit with a big ol’ iron grill (not in the photo) — are put there free of charge by Swiss forest owners, whether that’s the local town or a private landowner.

And just to make sure nobody has an excuse, there’s even an axe sittin’ in the wood shed on the left. Around here, hospitality apparently includes firewood and the tools to make more.
