This is really beautiful. When I was a kid my mom went to jail and rehab and I didn’t get to see her for over a year. It’s something I’ve started talking about more because it’s an experience that fundamentally shapes how I think about the world. People who go to jail aren’t “bad.” Some of them do terrible things but a lot of them are backed into impossible corners and make bad choices instead of awful choices. It’s one of the reasons my life led me to the world of restorative and transformative justice practices. I’ve witnessed the power of real transformation and seen people come back from incredible odds. I wish a book like this had existed when I was younger. It would have meant a lot to me. I would have felt less alone and ashamed in the experience.
