Fabula is a peer-reviewed journal specializing in historical and comparative folk narrative research. It publishes articles, reports, reviews and news in English, French, and German. At the ISFNR Congress held in Göttingen in 1998 Fabula was made the official journal of the Socitey. The journal was founded in 1958 by Kurt Ranke and since 2010 is jointly edited by Hans-Jörg Uther, Christine Shojaei Kawan, and Doris Boden. Former editors include Rolf Wilhelm Brednich, Ulrich Marzolph, Elfriede Moser-Rath, Rudolf Schenda, and Hans-Jörg Uther. The journal is published by Walter de Gruyter & Co. in Berlin (degruyter.de). Since 1991, Fabula has regularly forwarded reports and notices of the International Society for Folk Narrative Research.
Fabula focuses on the study of folk narrative traditions in their various forms (tales of magic, novellae, religious tales, fables and animal tales, legends, jokes and anecdotes, exempla, ballads and other poetic genres, etc.), on the interrelationship between oral and literary traditions and on contemporary forms and media (everyday narrative, contemporary legends, storytelling on the Internet, movies, etc.). Although the bulk of the contributions deal with narratives from Europe and other parts of the western world, there are also numerous contributions concerning traditions from other culture areas.
