Nicolas Berggruen

Founder and chairman, Berggruen Holdings

Nicolas Berggruen is the founder and chairman of Berggruen Holdings, a private investment firm that manages his investments and has made over 100 investments globally, including in real estate, media, and retail sectors.

He was born and raised in Paris and moved to the United States where he attended New York University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in finance and international business in 1981.

After college, Berggruen began his career in finance, working for Bass Brothers Enterprises and Jacobson & Co. In 1984, he founded Berggruen Holdings, which owns properties across Europe and the United States. His wealth primarily stems from his Berggruen Holdings investments. He co-founded the fund Alpha Investment Management in 1988, which was sold to Safra Bank in 2004.

In 2010, he founded the Berggruen Institute, a think tank exploring governance, philosophy, and culture. The Institute has established centers in Los Angeles, Beijing, and Venice and launched the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture, a $1 million award aimed at recognizing transformative thinkers.
