Introduced to raves in his youth in the Bay area, Hsieh loved the feeling he got vibing with the crowd.  It got him started trying various substances: he developed a fondness for specific ones, from alcohol to dissociatives -- the Italian liqueur Ferne Branca, ketamine, nitrous oxide, mushrooms, and marijuana, among others.
